Q: What will worship be like?
A: You will find that on Sunday mornings, our congregation will sing together both contemporary praise songs and the traditional hymns. The words to all the songs will be projected on a screen at the front of the sanctuary. Each week, Pastor Mike will spend a little time sharing prayer requests for both church members, local people in need and larger concerns around the globe. Scripture will be read and the sermon will challenge us to apply the Bible's truths to the real issues of our lives and our world. Calvary celebrates Communion on the first Sunday of every month with the grape juice and bread.
Q: How should I dress for church?
A: People wear a combination of semi-dressy and casual clothes. Some are in dresses and suits coats while others are in very casual pants and shirts. Please be yourself. In the summer people wear very comfortable clothes, even shorts!
Q: How long is worship?
A: Our service usually runs from 9:30am- 10:45am.
Q: Will anyone single me out when I visit?
A: NO! We realize what a significant step of faith it is just to walk through the doors of a church. You will not be asked to stand up and introduce yourself and nobody will single you out in any way. Feel free to enjoy the service and remain completely anonymous if you like, but we would like to meet you! During the announcement time, please feel free to fill out the registration slip in this week's bulletin. This is a good way for you to let us know if there is any way we may be of service to you. Sometimes after announcements will have a brief time where everyone stands for an informal time of greeting one another. People may introduce themselves to you. We hope you will find people here to be very warm, welcoming and friendly. At the end of the service our pastor greets people at the front door of the sanctuary. This is a good time to say hello and connect.
Q: Where do my children go during worship?
A: We provide a well staffed nursery during our church services for your family. Children ranging in age from infants through kindergarten are encouraged to come play with us. The nursery is easy to find, by exiting the sanctuary at the side door, making an immediate left down the hallway and following it all the way to the back. The nursery is on your left, next to the preschool classroom. Bathrooms can be found in the hallway behind the nursery, easily accesible to the children and nursery workers.
School aged children (1st-3rd grade) are encouraged to participate with their families in the worship service, until the sermon, where they can leave the sanctuary (at the side door) to attend Children's Church. A teacher will direct them out of the sanctuary, and down the same hallway to the Primary Elementary Classroom.
Please pick up your children immediately following the last worship song, and feel free to head downstairs (stairs opposite side entrance to Sanctuary) for a time of Coffee Fellowship and donuts!
Q: Please tell me more about your nursery?
A: As mentioned above, our nursery is for infants through kindergarten. It is located in rear of the church behind the sanctuary and is always fully staffed with at two adults or at least one adult and teen(s) from our church members. Our nursery is furnished with a crib, changing table, age appropriate toys, a soft carpet for crawling and a table for coloring. When you drop off your child, you will sign them in and receive a number, that will flash on the screen at the front of the sanctuary, if you are needed to come to your child for any reason. We also have a crying/nursing area set up in our balcony, the door is at the rear right of the sanctuary. There are comfortable chairs and a changing table there, so you can still enjoy the service.
Q: When is communion and can I receive it?
A: Communion is taken before the sermon on the first Sundays of the month. All people who have chosen to believe in Jesus Christ as their Savior are welcome to receive communion.
Q: Do you have any adult classes on Sunday mornings? And what about my kids?
A: Yes, we usually have a few options for adults on Sunday mornings. Our Sunday School is called Bible Discoveries! Pastor Mike encourages discussion and dialogue as a follow-up to his sermon every week as one class, and we usually offer at least one women's study and a class focused on encouraging new believers/ growing stronger in the basics of our faith. Locations for each class are listed in the weekly bulletin.
Children's and youth classes are held in age appropriate groups for ages 2-grade 12. The curriculum being used is by the publisher David C. Cook for all the classes except the high school, which is using a curriculum by Simply Youth Ministry.
Q: Can I leave right after worship?
A: Yes, of course you can, or you may join us downstairs for refreshments and conversation. For many people, this is their favorite part of the week!
Q: Where can I find a map and driving directions?
A: We are located on 342 Prospect Street in Torrington, CT. Our parking lot is located on Church Street directly next to the church. From Main Street, turn onto Church Street and the parking lot is on your right. Click here for a map and to get driving directions.
Q: I have more questions. How can you help me?
